Summer is a great time to show off your perfect nails. Whether you’re on vacation or at the pool, having beautiful nails will make you feel confident.
If you have gel nails, however, it’s important to keep them looking their best. Use these tips to give your gel nails a refresh during the summer.
1. Prevent Peeling
Summer is in full swing. That means more time to get out and about, whether you’re going on a tropical vacation or just to your local pool. But when you have gel nails, it can be a little bit trickier to get that refresh. Here are my tips for how to (safely) remove your gel nails, so you can give your nails a fresh look for the new season.
If you’ve been wearing gel polish for a while, you may have noticed that your nails can start to feel fragile. Or maybe you’re like me, and your nail constantly grow out and chip at the tips. I wear gel because I hate having to touch up my manicure every few days, but it’s not exactly easy to change my nail polish when I’m feeling bored with the color.
Fortunately, there are ways to safely remove your old polish without damaging your natural nails.
Now that summer is here, it’s time to think about switching up your nail color and routine. Here’s how to keep your gels looking gorgeous during the sunny season.
1. Protect Your Cuticles
The sun can dry out your cuticles and cause them to become brittle and flaky, which is a problem for gel nails because they make it harder for polish to adhere to the nail, says celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley. To protect your nails from UV damage, use a cuticle oil every day and apply SPF sunscreen on your hands if you’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time.
2. Go for a Subtle Color Change
If you want a different look, don’t go too dark or too light with your shade because this can cause discoloration or lifting of the gel nail polish, says Hadley. Instead, opt for an in-between hue like nude or soft pink. You can also try something totally different by painting on some simple nail art with a thin brush, says celebrity manicurist Naomi Gonzalez.
3. Choose the Right Remover
To remove gel nails at home without damaging your nails, stick with acetone removers that are specially designed to
Gel nails are great in the summer, but sometimes you want to do a refresh before your next appointment. See our tips and tricks.
There are two ways to go about this:
1) Cover the color with a new gel coat and re-cure or 2) Apply regular nail polish on top and seal with a top coat.
If you go with option 1, there are two different types of gel colors you can use: gel colors that come in pots (like pigments) or gel colors that come in a bottle (similar to nail polish). We recommend using the gel colors that come in a pot as they have more pigment and will cover the existing color better. Use an eyeliner brush to sweep on the gel color in small strokes, just like you would apply nail polish. Then re-cure under a LED lamp for 30 seconds or under UV for 2 minutes. But be careful if you’re using UV lamp as it can over-cure your nails.
If you go with option 2, make sure to get high quality nail polish that lasts as long as possible. If you use cheap brands, it will chip within hours, which is no good. Then seal it with a top coat and leave to dry completely before doing
1.Wipe nails down with alcohol to remove residue.
2.Remove shine from nail surface with a 180 grit buffer.
3.Apply cuticle oil to nails to rehydrate and prevent cracking.
4.Push back cuticles and file the shape of the nails you would like to keep.
5.Buff the top of the gel polish(the shiny part) lightly with a 180 grit buffer, being careful not to buff too hard or it can cause peeling or lifting to occur prematurely around the edges of your nails.
6.Wash hands and use an acetone soaked cotton ball to wipe down nails, removing all dust leftover from buffing and filing.
7.Apply base coat and cure under UV light for 2 minutes, or LED light for 30 seconds; then apply 2 coats of color and cure after each coat for 2 minutes(LED 30 seconds).
8.Apply top coat and cure for 2 minutes (LED 30 seconds).
9.Wipe nails down with alcohol again to remove tacky layer of gel polish, leaving a smooth finish on your nail surface.
