Things You Need to Know About Gel Nails

If you love the idea of a manicure that lasts until it grows out, gel nails are probably right up your alley. With proper care, gel nails can last for as long as 3 weeks, making them a great alternative to traditional polish. Before you make your first appointment, however, there are a few things you should know about gel nails and how to take care of them.

4 Things Every Woman Should Know About Gel Nails

If you’re looking for tips on how to get gel nails started and how to keep your nails looking beautiful after the polish is on — these are the things you need to know.

1. Gel is not acrylic

One of the biggest misconceptions about gel nails is that they are made from acrylics. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Acrylics may look similar to gel at first glance, but when applied properly, they have a much smoother finish. In fact, many people don’t realize that their manicurist has used gel until they see them again after two weeks with no chips!

2. Gels require UV light

After your manicurist applies the gel color of your choice to your fingernails, she will place each

You’ve probably heard about gel nails, but do you really know what they are? And do you know what the real differences between gel and regular nail polish are? Gel nails are basically a type of artificial nails that most closely resembles the natural nail. Unlike acrylics, gels are not made from an acrylic powder and liquid monomer. Instead, they’re made from a unique polymer that cures when exposed to ultraviolet light.

In just 20 minutes or less, your nails will be dry and ready to go! No more worrying about chipping or smudging. And because gels harden under a UV light (not in the air), they last longer than regular nail polish.

To remove gel nails, make sure you go to a salon where professionals can take them off safely. They should soak your fingers in acetone for about 10 minutes until the gel dissolves into a liquefied state and then gently push it off with an orange wood stick. Do not try to peel gel polish off yourself! This will damage your natural nails!

Gel nails are a blessing for the indecisive. The long-lasting manicure is an easy way to change up your nail style without having to commit to one shade or style (or any at all). Not only that, but gel also comes in a variety of colors and finishes. Yes, we’re talking matte nails, chrome nails, glitter nails, and even ones that look like stone.

If you’re just now considering gel nails as your go-to manicure method, here’s what you need to know.

Any nail polish can be turned into a gel formula, so brand options are endless. “I’ve used OPI, Essie, China Glaze and Zoya Gel Polish,” says Cynthia M. Rivas, a certified nail artist in Orange County.

Matching the color of your nails to your outfit is now easier than ever. “Gel polish allows you to wear any nail color you want,” says Rivas. “You can even wear dark colors in the summer months.”

The gel is cured under a UV light, so there’s absolutely no drying time. This means you can walk out of the salon and immediately use your hands with no fear of smudging.

Gel polishes can last up to two weeks without chipping or peeling, but most people get fill-ins every two weeks because the new growth starts to look obvious at that point.

“Gel manicures aren’t as damaging as acrylics because there is no filing on the natural nails,” says Rivas.”In fact, it helps strengthen weak nails because it seals in moisture.”

Realizing how long-lasting gel manicures are, I decided to give them a try. Gel nails are not cheap, so I made an appointment for one at my salon and asked for the pros and cons.

My manicurist said gel nails last longer because they’re cured with a UV light. She also said that the gel nail polish is thicker than regular nail polish and therefore lasts longer without chipping or cracking. There’s also no need for a base coat or top coat, but she did apply one of each to ensure the longevity of my gel mani.

She then began my manicure by removing my previous polish and shaping my nails with a file. After applying a base coat, she applied two coats of Essie Gel Couture polish in the color “Waltz.” She then cured each coat under UV light for one minute. After curing the second coat, she applied a topcoat and again cured it for one minute under UV light.

Once cured, my manicurist used an alcohol pad to get rid of any residue on my nails from the polish application process. Then she massaged cuticle oil into my cuticles and gave me hand lotion to rub into my hands.

The entire process took less than 30 minutes, which

You’ve probably heard that gel nails are a healthier alternative to regular manicures. They’re more durable and they look glossier, but they also take much longer to dry. If you’re gearing up for a fall wedding or just want to make sure your mani lasts right through the season, try one of these three fall nail colors for gel nails:

1. Glitter: If you want to get your sparkle on this fall, you don’t have to stick with just reds and greens. Purple and blue are also great options! Try deep eggplant shaded glitter for a fun twist on the usual purple, or bright sapphire blue for something completely different. A glittery gold or silver would be great too.

2. Neutral: For many people, a neutral shade like beige is their go-to color for fall. It’s easy to wear, goes with everything in your wardrobe, and won’t clash with your skin tone (as long as you choose the right shade). But neutrals aren’t just boring! Try a bolder brown or gray shade instead of just black or white, and add a little sparkle with shiny gold accents around your cuticles or along the tips of your nails. You can even try painting all ten fingers
