Gel nail varnish is applied in a similar way to standard nail polish, however it needs to be cured using an LED or UV lamp after application. It also lasts much longer than standard nail varnish, up to 14 days without needing a top up.

There are now many different brands of gel nail varnish available on the market, some better than others, so here are my top 7 tips for choosing the best gel nail varnish and how to apply it properly:

1. Finding the best type of gel nail varnish for you

The best type of gel nail varnish is one with a chip free formula. Depending on the brand, some formulas are more prone to chipping than others, so you may need to do a bit of trial and error to find the best one for you. But dont be afraid to experiment!

Gel nail varnish is hugely popular due to its chip resistant, long lasting properties. However, as with most things, it’s important to use the right tools and follow a few simple steps to achieve flawless gel nail varnish every time.

Firstly, use only the best gel nail varnish. In my experience, CND Shellac is one of the best brands of gel nail varnish because it is famous for being chip resistant and lasting up to 3 weeks. In addition, CND Shellac is a thin gel nail varnish that requires no base coat which means that it can be applied quickly and easily.

Secondly, you must use a good quality UV lamp that will cure the gel nail varnish in half the time of a normal UV lamp. The best type of UV lamp for curing gel nail varnish is a LED lamp which are quicker than traditional UV lamps and are also known for lasting much longer.

4. Apply two coats of color (ensuring each coat is cured under lamp for 2 minutes).

5. Apply a thin layer of top coat and cure for 2 minutes (as before).

6. Wipe each nail gently with purified alcohol or cleanser gel to remove any sticky residue left by the top
