The French Mani is Back

I am by nature a messy, disorganized person. I’m the type of woman who can’t even finish a sentence without dropping the pen, spilling my coffee, and banging my knee on the table.

But when it comes to my nails, I’m a total perfectionist. I’ve been getting weekly manicures since high school, and they’re worth every penny. My nails are always perfectly filed and polished. It’s so rare that I’m ever not wearing nail polish; in fact, my husband once said he doesn’t even remember what my naked nails look like!

Which is why I was shocked to see an article in Cosmo last week about the rise of the naked nail. The trend is being called “au naturel” or “naked” — and it’s everywhere. From celebrities like Nicole Richie to fashion designers like Marc Jacobs, women are saying no to polish altogether and showing off their natural nails.

It’s the hottest new trend in manicures and will make you feel fresh, fun and loved. The French Mani is back! It’s the perfect gift for yourself or anyone who wants an effortless look that can pair with any outfit.

Do you want a manicure that makes your nails look beautiful? Of course you do! But you don’t want to spend all day waiting at the salon and then paying $30 just to get a gorgeous set of nails in return. That’s where I come in: My name is Jennifer Smith, and I’m here to help people like YOU achieve their dream nails!

This week, I’m bringing back the French Mani. I’d like to thank my friend and fellow New Yorker, Haley Nahman of The Fashion Spot for inspiring me. Her recent article on the return of this classic nail look sparked my interest, and I’m a firm believer that you should never feel trapped by trends.

So here’s to the French Mani. It’s clean, it’s classic, it’s chic!

The French manicure is the ultimate in classic nail polish. It’s a clean and timeless look that can be worn for any occasion, whether it’s to work, out on the town, or your wedding day. The best part is, you can match your nails to your outfit because there are so many different shades of pink and beige that you’re sure to find a shade that suits you. But what if you want something a little more adventurous? Well, we’ve got you covered with our list of the best French mani colors!

Whether you’re looking for something dark and mysterious or light and airy, there’s something in this list that will suit your taste. From deep purples to bright pinks, here are the top ten French mani colors to try this summer.

In the past decade, as nail art has become more and more popular, the French Manicure has fallen out of favor. But this Spring, designers like Dior, Chanel, and Prada brought it back with a vengeance. The new version is a little less “old-lady” and a lot more chic–the perfect manicure for someone who wants to make a statement without looking like they are trying too hard.

At first glance, this manicure looks intimidating. But it’s actually easier than you might think. I’ll show you how to create the perfect French Mani in just five easy steps.

Step 1: Choose Your Colors

The traditional French Mani uses two colors: a light pink (or sometimes white) base color and a nude tip color. Some people think that you can use any nude shade for the tip color–but if you want your mani to be truly “French,” you need to stick with something that’s very light and slightly pink. My two favorite shades are OPI’s Samoan Sand and Essie’s Allure.

Step 2: Shape Your Nails

It doesn’t matter what shape your nails are, but they should all be the same length and shape (obviously). The most classic

Forget the long-stemmed rose. Nothing says “I’m French” like a perfectly executed French manicure, and it just happens to be the prettiest (and most practical) look for summer. The key to making it look modern is to keep things clean, simple, and subtle. We’ve put together some tips on how to master the classic nail art at home.

1. Start with a nude base, which should be close to your natural nail color but slightly lighter–a shade or two will do. (You can also use a clear basecoat, though you’ll need two coats of topcoat in that case.)

2. Apply a thin layer of white polish on your tips only–the best way to achieve this is by using an angled eyeliner or lip brush ($4; sallybeauty.com). Wipe off any excess paint from the brush before applying so there’s no bleeding underneath.

3. Finish with one coat of topcoat for a glossy look.
