The Nail Art Trend: What You Need To Know

The latest trend in nails is definitely “ombre” nails. When I first saw them I thought it was cool and unique, but I wondered how much work it would be to do this kind of nail design at home.Ombre (or “somber” – the word for ‘shadow’ in French) refers to a gradual blending of one colour hue to another. It has been used in art since the 18th century. Wikipedia defines ombre as:

Ombre (from the French word meaning “shaded”) is the gradual blending of one colour hue to another, usually moving tints and shades from light to dark. It has become most prominent as a feature in interior design and home decorating, especially concerning textile products such as carpets or rugs, or wallpaper with a gradual change of color on each strip, or tile with a gradient effect. Ombre can also be used in hair dyeing and makeup such as lipstick and eye shadow.

I think this trend first started showing up on Pinterest and then trickled down into YouTube tutorials and then beauty bloggers followed suit by doing their own versions of “ombre” nails. Here are some examples from Pinterest:

The hottest nail art trend is here! Ombre nails are the latest fashion to hit the streets. They are easy to achieve and are well suited for any occasion. This two-toned nail look won’t fail you. The ombre look is created by blending two or more colors of nail polish together to achieve a striking, multicolored effect on your nails.

What You Need:

Nail polish (2 or more colors)

Plastic spoon

Toothpicks

Paper cups

Acetone nail polish remover (with acetone) and cotton balls

Paint brush (optional)

Step 1: Apply a base coat of white nail polish to your nails. As mentioned in our earlier blog post about base coats, this will be your canvas for applying the ombre effect. It’ll also help the different colors that you use stand out better on your nails. Give it plenty of time to dry (about 15 minutes) before going on to step 2.

Step 2: Create gradients for each of your fingers by mixing two colors together in a paper cup. Use a spoon to apply the mixed color onto the first third of your nail, then gradually build up the color over the following thirds until all

Ombre is a French word meaning “shaded,” and it’s used to describe a color that graduates from light to dark. In hair, you may have heard of “Ombre” highlights, which are lighter at the ends than at the roots. In nails, you’ll see this design transition from dark to light or light to dark (or any other two colors) and can be done using your favorite nail polish shades!

The sky is the limit when it comes to choosing your own Ombre design. Use contrasting colors that pop like yellow and blue or black and white. Or create a subtler look by staying within the same color family like pink and red.

Don’t forget about all of those other tools in your nail arsenal like glitter or even rhinestones! Be as creative as you want with this trend and create something totally unique
