The Secret to Long Nails is a blog dedicated to teaching you how to grow strong, healthy nails. We’re here to encourage and help you grow your nails and maintain them after they’ve reached their goal length. Whether you’re a beginning nail grower or an advanced one, we’re here to help! Just remember: nothing happens overnight, but with patience and dedication, anything is possible!

As many of you know, I had a very difficult time growing my nails when I first started. My goal was to reach the point where I could paint my nails every day, but it took months before I finally saw any improvement in them. Many people gave up before they ever got there–but for those who didn’t give up, the results were worth it!

Let’s get this out of the way first: This is not a blog about how to grow long nails. It is a blog about how to make existing nails stronger, healthier and longer. Now, this is a topic that has always been a mystery to me, I mean nail health, until recently when I finally got a grip (get it?) on what it takes to make strong healthy nails.

I’ve always had brittle nails that would just constantly break. As you can imagine, having long, beautiful nails was out of the question for me. It wasn’t until my late 20s that I finally understood what it takes to have strong healthy nails – and then it was only after talking with a coworker who also had brittle nails. She told me all about her experiences with vitamins and supplements and what she took and found helpful. I have to admit, I was skeptical, but figured it couldn’t hurt to try.

Here’s what worked for me: Calcium + Vitamin D3 This one surprised me because I’d never considered calcium for anything other than bones (duh). Vitamin D3 is crucial for proper absorption of calcium in the body. This one-two punch combo has done wonders for my nails as well as my teeth (which are now stronger than

It took me more than 5 years to grow my nails long and strong. I’ve tried everything. Hard gel nails, dip powder nails, acrylic nails, nail wraps: you name it. My nails were always a mess no matter what I did.

Until I realized that the secret to growing long nails is not in the manicure chair but on your dinner plate. I now eat a diet high in protein and biotin and take supplements every day. And you know what? My nails are stronger than ever!

Look at these long nails!

It’s a good thing I love my job. Because if I was just a regular person, I would have broken these things off by now. They are so long, and so sharp, and so pointy, that they would be pretty much useless for anything but stabbing people.

So how do I keep them from breaking? Well, the secret is two-fold:

1. Diet

2. Supplements

Diet

I know the food you eat affects the strength of your nails. For example, when I eat lots of sugar, my nails become more brittle and have a tendency to break more easily. When I cut down on sugar, they get stronger and stay on better. The same goes with other nails-strengthening foods like beans, eggs, and fish… but also with foods that weaken your nails like white flour and processed foods. The key is eating organic whenever possible and staying away from junk food and processed foods as much as possible.

Supplements

With supplements the key to strengthening your nails is biotin (B complex) and gelatin (found in bone broth). Taking both of these will help strengthen your nails immensely. Once you start taking them you should notice a difference within a few weeks

Having brittle nails is a common problem for many women, especially those who have them professionally manicured. The secret to long nails is to strengthen the nail bed and nail plate.

Brittle nails can be caused by genetics, environmental factors, diet and personal care products. While you may not be able to control your genes or the environment, you have total control over your diet and personal care products.

What you eat on a daily basis contributes to the health of your nails as well as other parts of your body. A diet rich in protein, vitamins A, B12 and D, omega 3 fatty acids and minerals will help you grow strong healthy nails. Vitamin B12 is found in meat, poultry and fish; vitamin A is found in organ meats like liver, egg yolks and leafy greens; vitamin D is found in fortified milk and fatty fish like salmon; omega 3s are found in fish oil supplements or flaxseed. Since most people don’t eat these foods everyday, it’s important to take a multivitamin with at least 100% DV of each nutrient mentioned above.

The personal care products that you use also play an essential role in the health of your nails. Nail polish contains harsh chemicals that dry out the nail plate and make it

Ombre nails are so hot right now. I love this trend because it’s a cute way to incorporate multiple colors on your nails without looking tacky. Since I’ve gotten my gelish manicure, I wanted to try ombre nails using gelish.

My nails are still pretty short and brittle, but they have gotten much stronger since I started taking gelatin supplements every day.

I hope you like the look of my pink and white ombre nails!

My nails are growing like crazy thanks to biotin and gelatin! I never thought I’d be able to grow them this long. If you couldn’t grow your nails long before, try gelatin and biotin.

Biotin is a B vitamin that is great for hair, skin and nails. Gelatin is high in protein that helps strengthen the nails. I take 10,000mcg of biotin every day along with a tablespoon of Great Lakes gelatin. My nails are so much stronger now!

I also use nail hardener on the tips of my nails to help prevent chipping. I’m wearing Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Pink-a-Boo right now. It’s a very pretty light pink creme that reminds me of candy:) The formula is great as well! It dries fast and was opaque with 2 coats without staining my nails or cuticles. However, it does chip easily. You definitely need to use a top coat with this polish if you want it to last.
