With the rise of foot and nail care awareness, it is easy to overlook the importance of this often-neglected aspect of our health. The event has been organized by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education department for the past 20-plus years and is set to take place at the Grace Lutheran Church on April 21-25. The clinic is open to anyone in need of foot and nail care, with no registration required. However, it is recommended to schedule an appointment in advance to ensure availability.

As Outreach Program Manager Amy Cummings explained, the program was initially created to address a gap in foot care education for healthcare professionals and provide additional foot care resources to the community. “Foot care is such an integral part of a person’s health and well-being,” Cummings said. “Our clinic offers an invaluable resource to people in our community that have trouble caring for their feet themselves or neglect them due to medical or physical restrictions.”
The event is a result of the collaboration between Dr. Tara Beuscher, a renowned healthcare professional and author of various foot and nail care texts, and the Continuing Education department. Since its inception in 2000, the program has expanded into a multi-day event. “It may seem like a niche offering, but it fills a very real and growing need,” Avery Shanahan, a Continuing Education marketing specialist, emphasized. “Many of the folks who come to our clinic need a little extra help with toenail care, especially as it becomes harder to manage on their own due to physical challenges.”
The event has become a valuable resource for both the community and healthcare professionals alike. Registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals will be on-site to provide expert care and assessments.

As Cummings noted, the clinic often sees returning individuals, including those with diabetes and other potential issues affecting their feet. “Our clinic offers an invaluable resource to people in our community that have trouble caring for their feet themselves or neglect them due to medical or physical restrictions.”
The event is not only beneficial for those in need of foot and nail care but also for healthcare professionals who can learn from the expert care and assessments provided. “Our program is so unique, we get nurses from all over the country and even the world,” Cummings added. “Last year we had nurses come from Boston to Florida, California to Michigan, St. Maarten, and even Japan! It is such an honor to not only be able to showcase our terrific program to see these individuals that come, but also our great community!”
