A Simple Guide: 5 Rules to Improve Hand & Nail Health

So there you have it, the 5 rules of proper hand and nail care. Remember to eat a healthy diet, use sunscreen, moisturize, wash with warm water and don’t smoke. With these 5 simple rules you will ensure that your hands and nails stay healthy for years to come.

1. Don’t cut cuticles

2. Do use moisturizers

3. Don’t over wash your hands

4. Do use gloves

5. Do keep nails trimmed

Rule 1: Don’t Cut Cuticles!

This rule is by far the most important rule to follow in order to achieve healthy strong nails and hands. You may be surprised to learn that the cuticle is actually a vital part of protecting your fingers from infection and germs. The skin around the nail, which you may call the cuticle, is actually called the eponychium (or “proximal fold”). It is a layer of skin that protects the base of your fingernail from bacteria and fungus. Cutting hangnails or pushing back your cuticles can cause this barrier to break down, which can lead to painful infections or hangnails. If you have dead skin at the base of your finger nails, apply a small amount of cuticle oil or cream along the nail bed and gently push back with a rubber-tipped pusher or orange wood stick.

We’ve been seeing a lot of talk about keeping hands and nails healthy in the blogosphere lately. We couldn’t agree more. Especially considering our recent launch of the new Nail Tek II Intensive Therapy (for soft, weak, peeling or damaged nails). Hand and nail health is something that should be taken seriously.

Here are a few simple tips to get your hands and nails in great shape:

Keep your nails dry and clean. Dry hands are less likely to become infected with bacteria or fungi that can cause nail disease. Clean under the nails regularly with soap and water or an orange wood stick.

Dry your hands thoroughly after washing them or after being in water.

Moisturize daily to prevent the skin from cracking. This is especially important during winter months when the air is cold and dry. And remember, cracked skin around the nails can allow fungus or bacteria to enter and cause infection!

Clean your nail instruments before use. It’s important to keep your tools clean to prevent bacteria from spreading from one person to another, or from one part of your body to another. Some tools need special care; for example, nail clippers can be sterilized by wiping them with alcohol (wipe with alcohol only; don’t soak).
