Nails are often overlooked when it comes to overall health and manicures. Many people do not realize that the health of their nails is actually a reflection of their overall health. A healthy diet, vitamins, and certain nail care practices can all contribute to healthier nails. Nail damage is very common among those who frequently have their nails done by professionals or at home. The following are some tips to help prevent nail damage.

Keep your nails natural. Natural nail manicures are not as popular as acrylic or gel manicures, but they do give your nails a break from these harsh chemicals. They also allow your nails to breathe, which prevents fungus growth and yellowing of the nail bed.

Avoid picking at your cuticles or peeling polish off of your nails when you start seeing wear on the surface of your nails. This can cause lifting and may lead to infection or further damage.

If you notice any signs of a fungal infection such as discoloration or flaking, you should see a dermatologist immediately for diagnosis and treatment options in order to prevent further infection and nail damage.

If your nail polish doesn’t last long at all, even if you thought it was dry, consider these five tips:

Use a blow dryer on the cool setting for 30 seconds after applying each coat of polish and/or after waiting about 10 minutes before touching up any smudges with a second coat. Some people recommend using an air conditioner instead, but that is only an option if you are indoors in the summertime! Tip 1: Apply several layers of nail polish. You can get away with spending less time at the salon because you don’t need to go back as often. Remember, you want to apply 2-3 layers before applying a clear coat over it to get better results.

Tip 2: To increase the life of your manicure, avoid getting your hands wet during the first 24 hours after it’s been applied. This includes washing dishes and cleaning.

Tip 3: Don’t forget to apply a base coat to protect your nail from becoming stained when you apply nail polish.

Tip 4: Use petroleum jelly around the edges of your nails before applying nail polish. This will prevent the polish from smudging onto your skin around the edges of your nails and make it easier to remove later on.

Tip 5: If you want to change up your look for an evening out or event, try applying glittery sparkle on top of your base coat! This will give you an entirely new look without having to do anything else!

There are so many choices for shapes of nails and it is important to pick one that fits the shape of your nail bed. For example, if you have a narrow nail bed, go for a square or oval shape to elongate the nail.

If you have naturally shorter nails, I highly recommend sticking with an almond shape. You can switch it up too! I have long almond nails right now but sometimes I’ll also get square or round nails.

The shape of your natural nail will determine what kind of acrylic (if any) will be added to your nail. This is why it’s a good idea to get a manicure before getting acrylic nails.

If you are somebody who works with their hands often or has children, I don’t recommend getting nails that are super long because they will break more easily. A great length is anywhere from around 1-2mm past the end of your finger without them being too fragile.
